We are not the snowflakes; it’s the hair-trigger reactionaries who see censorship in every criticism or personal objection that freak out.

Such self-determined guardians of objectivity provide cover for people who really just want to preserve their old-timey racism and white male supremacy.

While some progressive scolds want to bowdlerize racism, sexism, and other prejudices out of classic literature—I’m very much against it—most of us who read a lot have had to grapple with such things, sometimes in works that we love.

Another student talked about how it was an allegory for the founding of England. I mentioned the problems that implied with UK’s history of imperialism and whatnot and he basically then defended the allegory as history.

This hits home bc I remember how I felt watching Return of the King and all the people of color were evil.

I later talked to a college class about my experiences with racism as a passing man and mentioned that was unnecessary.

Several students got offended and, w/o irony, defended Hobbit genetics.

As a foam-at-the-mouth red state young Republican at the time, it was something that pissed off a segment of the base, yes.

But was citing it to contrast where country was then vs now. Obviously that base still exists but I think AWB has more motivated public support now, as does ACA.

Dems held House for 40 years, acted like they owned the place. GOP rolled them after aborted “HillaryCare” and foisted AWB.

Newt shut down government, took massive L, Clinton won reelection.

I get their fear, but it’s not 1994 anymore and last week’s election should have meant something.

yes, that's the trauma to which I was referring.

I was wondering last night if this generation of Dem leadership can't shake the trauma of 1994, when Schumer and Durbin were cutting their teeth in the House, taking all the wrong lessons from that era.
