Nah, for Xal, hugging is a much more intimate interaction than, say, sex. He can't stand hugging anyone he doesn't trust, and rudely interrupts anyone who tries to do so without his consent. In his two lives, he's only been happy to hug these four people.

This reminds me of when I got called a "troublemaker" by a (wealthy, older male) church elder in front of the (all-male) session because I calmly raised my first-ever concern as a voting member of the congregation. I was 25. It was 100% bc I, a woman, was gently questioning his shitty leadership.
It's such a red flag for misogyny in some form, when colleagues or managers describe a woman as "difficult", without any kind of evidence of any serious misconduct.
