It saddens me that Gabriel is 1000% doomed by the narrative

TL:DR list

I really like CastleVania
August 20, 2025 at 9:28 PM
Order of Ecclesia

The best IgaVania imo. I love the structure change, the visuals are jaw dropping at times, it's tied with RoB for my favorite ost, the bosses are great, getting to the castle is rewarding, and the power ups are finally fresh for the first time since SotN.

Peak.

Adventure Rebrith

Pretty solid ClassicVania with great music and some pretty fresh ideas considering it's supposed to be a remake.

Portrait of Ruin

Great weapons, Great bosses, some of the best music since Rondo, and holy FUCK I love the painting worlds as a solution the the castle getting stale.

Also I'm a sucker for two goobers tag teaming evil.

Dawn of Sorrow

A pretty good game that inherits most of it better qualities from Aria and introduced it's own shortcomings.

Seals suck, the map is mostly mediocre, weapon variety is worse, and presentation is mostly been-there done-that.

BUT THE BOSSES ARE SO GOOD THOUGH?? FUCK I PUT IT IN A TIER

Aria of Sorrow

I love the weapon variety, the soul system is rad, the map is really well designed, the story is fun, and the visuals are a stellar breath of fresh air that makes the 4th castle crawl stand out from the crowd.

Only took a whole hardware generation to finally out do SotN.

Harmony of Dissonance

A pretty good game that ultimately feels too much like a compromised SotN for it to go higher than a B.

Circle of the Moon

Far and away the worst game in the series and one of the worst games I've ever suffered through.

Grindy mechanics, uninteresting map, abysmal controls, bland visuals, and a cast of some of the worst designed bosses I've ever had the displeasure of suffering through.

CV64

A great...show case as to why 3D isn't inherently an upgrade from 2D.

Not as bad as people say, but it feels empty and generic. Platforming is okay, combat is inoffensive, some areas look nice?

Lack of real ambition beyond being 3D makes it decent at it's best and forgettable at worst.

Legends

The end of the winning streak and the begin of what I consider to be the series dark ages.

Dead ends in a linear gauntlet platformer, enemies that respawn before they're even off screen, and no improvements to the GB games structure despite releasing nearly a decade later than the first.

Symphony of the Night

A refreshing take on CastleVania that still feels mostly faithful in the right ways, with the best map to explore the IgaVanias have to offer, great exploration and fun power ups, all steeped in some of the series most excellent presentation and quirky humor.

Lame bosses tho.
August 20, 2025 at 8:53 PM
Bloodlines

Pretty standard gameplay that meets the series par, but honestly the setpieces are what makes this game for me.

Going on a spooky tour of war torn Europe is a sick idea and the visuals honestly blow IV out of the water in a lot of places.
August 20, 2025 at 8:50 PM
Rondo of Blood

fucking PEAK

Best bosses, best levels, best music, vastly better enemy design than prior entries, and visuals so good that nearly every 2D CastleVania after it used them as a foundation.
August 20, 2025 at 8:46 PM
CastleVania 93' / Chronicles

Honestly pretty good. great music and fun levels with cool set pieces. Nothing mind blowing, but a solid monster ass kicking adventure.
August 20, 2025 at 8:43 PM
CastleVania IV

Amazing controls, great level design, great music, great visuals and some of the best bosses in the series.
