The American Stupid has thrived in all eras, but unprecedented subjectivity, the demise of consensus expertise, rising functional illiteracy, and the collapse of all social infrastructure not motivated by profit have conspired to make this The Time of the Stupid.

I can't claim to be a massive Tom Stoppard fan (besides R&G are Dead and The Last Crusade, I'm not that familiar with his work), but I've always found this to be a lovely evocation of theatre as an act of communal imagination—a place for magic.

Yeah, this might be the best movie ever made.

Look, I'll be the first to admit he's not a great guy—and that he loses his luster each time he shows up just to get owned—but Rasputin has incredible swag in the early Hellboy books.

It might just be a budgetary thing, but I like that Thulsa Doom's gang in the prologue of Conan the Barbarian is little more than an evil D&D adventuring party. I always appreciate when you get a glimpse of a villain's ambitious striver period before they became established.

Reign: The Conqueror has to be the most obscure work of fiction that’s embedded itself deepest into my brain. I don’t know if it was actually any good, but ever since I saw Reign on Toonami as a kid I’ve been ominously invoking the PLATOHEDRON

Thoroughly enjoyed Ngozi Ukazu’s Barda. Even though the art isn’t my exact cup of tea, Ukazu updates the Fourth World without sacrificing any of its bleeding-heart sincerity or operatic grandeur. Lovely book, and a great introduction to the story for new readers.

It's nice that they made a "remastered" version of Knightfall for people who think ketchup is too spicy.

More evidence for my argument that RFK Jr. is a Hellblazer villain: this is purple prose worthy of a bad Vertigo horror comic. Jamie Delano after a serious concussion.

I am once again called upon to explain what Eyes Wide Shut is actually about

(it’s got less to do with Epstein and co. than it does the inner life of a man who’s *just* close enough to power to develop prurient fantasies and dreads about it)

I accept that Steely Dan is unc music—I accept that I myself am unc—but people should consider what John Darnielle said about them in an old Pitchfork interview. Few artists have been able to articulate Americans' comfort living alongside (and ignoring) total abjection quite like them.

ANNOUNCEMENT: In a gesture of international solidarity and good will, @cacomixpod.bsky.social and I will be releasing our PREMIUM Knightfall collaboration on our main feeds instead of paywalling it. The people have a right to know.

I understand people following their passions, but this is what’s known as being a sucker. How can an aging comics creator watch what happened to PAD (and others, for decades) and conclude “RIP to them but I’m different”?

BONUS EPISODE! We're talking New Gods, baby. After a little keynote essay about Kirby and the resonance of his idiosyncratic Fourth World Saga, we open up the mailbag to answer burning questions on topics ranging from the most kissable New God to Tom King's loyal service to Darkseid.
