so... im reading wicked, halfway through, and from everything ive heard about this book i thought that it would either be 1) misogynistic and kinda pervy or 2) violently edgy for no reason, and its neither so far? what happened to make the discourse around this book turn out like this

got reminded of the saga of the white colonizer born and raised in hong kong claiming fluency in cantonese and that cantonese is a dying language but was unable to even recognize written cantonese and just called it "written chinese". that was a doozy

the ghost of the ussr truly haunts our collective narrative like i feel so much grief on behalf of all of humanity that the ussr collapsed. so much blood sweat and tears to build a better world and for so long it was wonderful but it just didnt last. thats like pure existential grief lol

best thing ive read recently is analysis on current day china being a "pan-china" in line with pan-africaniam, pan-arabism, etc. i think each pan-____ will look very different from region to region but this way of looking at things really made a lot of things click in my head

in the midst of the current geopolitical environment... man like im sorry but i cant get over how disgusting the japanese government is being and how justified the chinese government is on this matter. japan has never formally apologized and the people are systemically taught denial or minimization
