If your argument is that you just wanted them to sign him for your own entertainment and interest value, that’s fine and I have nothing against that argument. But that’s not the same as saying it’s a good use of resources from a competitive standpoint.

So you’d expect him to out-perform what he’s done in NPB? When do guys with low contact rates get better as they move up to higher level competition? You don’t bet $17 million on an outcome that’s probably less than 1%.

Gallo not signing with the Padres as a free agent when there weren’t reports about them pursuing him is more favorable to the “the Padres weren’t pursuing him” argument than the “AJ failed” argument. You also just can’t expect NPB hitting numbers to translate to MLB.

Gallo is also not in the league anymore and the league has changed significantly since he was at his peak. A Gallo profile as his floor is a really low floor for $17 million.

You’re making a presumption on an offer to Gallo that there’s no evidence of ever existing. The Murakami deal seems a lot more like the rest of the league (including the Padres) just weren’t interested in him longterm at a high AAV so he took a shorter prove-it deal.

We tried to trade for Gallo, but we never were really connected to him as a free agent other than “this is a guy Preller has gone after previously” talk.
