Unleashing my inner poet, petting all the dogs I can, and riding my bike with great aplomb and alacrity. Vegetarian (yes, I like tofu) animal lover. Grower of plants.
Hear me about: traffic calming is for everyone but bikes. A thread.
1. Pinned bumpouts with a paint-only bike lane. Prevents bike lane passing, sort of. Shortens pedestrian crossing. I haven't seen them working, though. Bikes, however, have to choose getting hit by a car or run into solid concrete.

If you live in Milwaukee, this incident between Perez and Brooks is wild. By the way, Brooks totally did it, in my opinion. I would have affectionately touched your shoulder is how Brooks defended and denied the accusation. That gives me the ick.

I don't know how I didn't die or get severely injured tonight. A lady plowed through a red light. I somehow managed to avoid her t-boning me and running me over and the car coming down the road as well. This is what happens when you don't have access to the trail infrastructure meant for you.

Chock and Bates were robbed. The look on her face says it all.

Jordan Stoltz does NOT mess around. Holy shit! His 1000M was an OR. Yea, Jordan Stolz! Yea, Wisconsin!

The roads worse today than after we got 10+ inches.

Also, be a good neighbor and shovel your sidewalks. If your neighbor is elderly, do theirs, too.
February 9, 2026 at 3:47 PM
The ultimate in car-brain/windshield bias is someone getting irritated at your irritation at the unshoveled sidewalks and unplowed bike infrastructure because each time they step in their car, their needs are cared for. No, walking the dog doesn't count as transportation. It's a mild inconvenience.
February 9, 2026 at 12:23 AM
Don't complain. Do. Someone in my neighborhood is inconsistent with shoveling their corner-sometimes the walk by their front door, and rarely the other walk down the hill. So, I shoveled every bit of snow that had been tramped down, became ice. Advice? Don't buy a corner lot house (bought recently).
February 6, 2026 at 9:36 PM
Yes, that's right, I'm the crazy one for screaming at you because you almost murdered me trying to go through a solid red light. I had the walk signal. You were going about 50 mph and had to slam on the brakes. But, sure, I'm crazy for being upset. WTF is wrong with drivers?
February 4, 2026 at 9:24 PM
If, as a Department of Transportation, you're only concerned with cars throughput, can you call yourself a Department of Transportation? Today, I crossed LMD. The light is about 12 sec long to cross 6 lanes + a median. The wait time for the light is over 60 sec. Pedestrians have to wait over

So, we should just move on from one of the biggest scandals this nation has seen. Considering how bitter and full of retribution DJT is, he should comprehend, at least at the surface level, that we cannot because there has been no accountability or punishment for the heinous criminal acts.
February 4, 2026 at 3:07 PM
If you don't think it's a big deal to park your gigantic SUV in the pedestrian crossing, blocking the carveout, with plenty of other parking around, why don't you just stop and park in the middle of the street? It's no big deal; everyone else can just go around.
February 3, 2026 at 8:56 PM
It's frustrating for people, especially people in the media, to complain about traffic calming or bike infrastructure because it's a waste of money and they don't see anyone using them. Basically, if you don't use a car, you have to subsidize people who do while getting no benefit. I pay taxes, too!

Driver honking at me as they close-passed me on Whitnall, you know just to let me know that they were there and weren't going to move over one inch much less give me the required three feet.
February 2, 2026 at 3:07 PM
Canadian Pacific was blocking the KKRT this morning, the off-street trail. One truck was parked farther to the right, so folks could get through. The other wasn't, and the guy kept talking over me when I tried to calmly ask him to move over farther, so people can get through. 1/

The CNN analysis, including some new footage, of Alex Pretti's murder is brutal and damping.

For everyone out there: you have to be cool, calm and reasonable, so they can be utterly reckless.

Each day I ride to work in the Third Ward, I am painfully aware of how ill-equipped for the task WisDOT and MKE DPW are in providing adequate, well-designed, user friendly infrastructure for anyone who is not in a car. Quality, safe, maintenance. The I want to use it vs. I have to use it quotient.

So, Alex Pretti kicked the taillight of an ICE vehicle. Should he have done that? No. Was he assaulted for it? Yes. Was he carrying his weapon? Yes. Did he ever remove it? No. We don't know what precipitated his actions. Clearly he was angry or frustrated. Only one group hurt, killed someone. ICE.

First time all week that'd I've been cold when I got to work. And I'm exploring alternate routes to work. Let me tell you, today was not it. From the close passing within inches of me to the driver passing me in the parking lane on my right it's a real challenge to get places safely on my bike.
January 29, 2026 at 2:54 PM
The all this would go away if you just did what the government tells you is the exact argument that puts us at an impasse. The reason Walz, Frey, the people, Pritzker, Newsom, Bass, etc. have stood against these ICE raids is because they think they're wrong. They won't turn over lists or innocents.
January 29, 2026 at 2:16 AM
Pretty nice to get a few extra miles in on the commute home. It was a little less cold, and it felt good to be in the gleaming-so lovely-with that cold air on my face. There's still no better way to start or end a work day. 🚲

I was just looking at the dogs Chicka was playing with at daycare today, and one of them is a Vizsla named Felipe; I immediately and involuntarily thought: oh, you better watch out Felipe; ICE might get you.

What are we even doing in this world?
January 28, 2026 at 6:49 PM
Alex Pretti had his rib broken by 5 ICE agents the week prior to his murder. Protesting. ICE had him face down while agents put pressure enough on his back that his rib broke. I'm not sure if he was carrying a gun, but I can understand why he might after the encounter. He still didn't draw his gun.

I'm going to report this, but plowing the trail is only good if you can get on or off it.
