"Lore" is good and fun if it gets your imagination going and thinking about the world of the game in a different way. Doesn't need to be consistent or good storytelling.
When people say "Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy" is about Yoshi doing drugs, it's corny, but it does make it more fun/meaningful for them.

When people say "Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy" is about Yoshi doing drugs, it's corny, but it does make it more fun/meaningful for them.

As a kid reading the Super Mario World guide, the fact that they called this guy "Star Man" and implied he was an actual GUY who gave you the invincibility (if my memory is at all correct) certainly did more for my childhood imagination than if they just said "The Super Star is a power-up"

Or, the fact that Bob-Omb Battlefield has some amount of characters and dialogue making it feel a bit more alive, and slightly more like a real place in Mario's cartoon world.
IMO it is good that recent Mario games have more characters and world, just because it makes them more fun to explore.

The fact that the first area of Mario Odyssey is a little hat village in the clouds with hat people running around is fun. It has more sense of place and is more fun than if it were just "Level 1-1"
