In my classical game last night, my buddy found the one non-losing move as Black. 1) What is that move? 2) Please tell me the process the used to find it, because I would not have found it and I need to get better! #chesspunks #chess

Pawn endgames are tricky. What 1 move does White have here that forces a win, and if Black had the move, what is the 1 move that secures at least a draw and gives Black the advantage? #chesspunks #chess

Here's the final position.

In a game today, I checkmated my opponent in a way I've never seen before, by playing Ne6+,Bf8 Rxf8#. Does anyone know the name of this mating pattern? #Chesspunks #chess

I had to evaluate this forcing variation, 12 ply deep (yikes!), during my classical game last night. It was very fuzzy in my mind, but I thought Black was getting killed after 21.Qd3, so I didn't allow this variation. Was I right, or is Black OK, or better than OK? #Chesspunks #chess

This was a fun draw trying the French in a classical game for the first time. #Chesspunks #chess

I spent 3 hours watching IM Yuriy Krykun's videos (www.chessable.com/the-unexplor...) on the French yesterday and just played my first French game today. I think I like this opening. It was a 2+1 bullet game, but I had 93% accuracy according to lichess. #chesspunks #chess

Played a positionally dominating G/60 + 30 tonight, only to blunder on move 30 against my buddy rated 200 points higher. I love this game, but it is tough sometimes! 😜 #Chess #chesspunks

How does Black finish things off here? #chesspunks #chess

I am working through the wonderful @chessable.com course "Fundamental Chess Calculation" by @drcanchess.bsky.social , and in this position (Fischer v. Benko, 1963), I found the right continuation for White. Can you find the winning move for White? If so, HOW did you find it? #chesspunks #chess

Here is the full game.

From my classical game last night. If Black plays 52...Qxc5, White can play 53.Qd4+,Qxd4 54.Kxd4. Is this a win for White, or can Black draw? #chess #chesspunks

From a critical moment in my OTB game (a From's Gambit). I evaluated the 4 moves shown here. Three are fine, one is bad. Which one is bad, and why? #chesspunks #chess

Last night's classical game provided me the opportunity to do a nice king hunt. #chess #chesspunks

Same game as my last post, but earlier. I'm not in a good way here after 13.Bh5+! After 13...Ke6 14.Rg1 Nxh6 15.Qxh5+,Bf6 White played the very natural 16.O-O-O (second pic). After 16...Qe8 17.Qxe8 Raxe8 the attack is over. How should White have played here instead? #chesspunks #chess

Executed a very pretty mate in 2 in my classical game today. Does anyone know the name of this mating pattern? #chess #chesspunks

After a little tactical exchange, White is poised to gain back material due to the pawn on g5 attacking both the rook and the knight. Black has a big decision to make. ...Re6 jumps so mind, but there are other options too. What should Black do? #chess #chesspunks

That is what I played, and it worked well. Black has a big decision to make on how to respond here.

Tonight's classical game, and another tense battle. Black ha has a protected passed pawn and is up a pawn. How does White create some lovely chaos here?. #chess #chesspunks

Interesting idea, but Black can return the piece sac and stands better after . Nxf5 exf5; e6 Ne5!; fxe5 Bxe6
January 16, 2025 at 3:26 PM
I played fxg5 but thought for a long time about gxf5 instead. The computer actually says they are equivalent. If ...exf5 then yes, White should play e6. But what if Black recaptures with the knight?
January 16, 2025 at 3:22 PM
Yes! The is the move I played, and yes, LOTS of simplification. The key on this move is that you have to figure out what happens after fxg5 hxg5; Bxg5 Nxe5; Nxc8 Rxc8. Ideas?

My opponent had just played ...g5 in my afternoon classical game. I found a very good sequence and won a nice game. What would you do here? #chesspunks #chess
