Good to speak with CFA institute on how “skills” definitions are evolving

Firms are (rightly) sprinting to "agentify" tasks and capture AI productivity gains. There is no slowing down that journey. But there is a second, equally critical obligation: protecting the entry-level pipeline where foundational skills are built.

The White House’s new paper, “Artificial Intelligence and the Great Divergence,” stands out for its fact-checked and source-driven humility. Yes, it’s very different from a White House Speech and of course it’s bullish on the future and on President Trumps role.

In 2022, CEO confidence peaked. Everything since has been a reset. CEOs are usually optimistic. This year, there’s a noticeable dose of humility. These reflections come from the 29th PwC Global CEO Survey, which I have been using with clients for the past 15 years. The longitudinal view tells the story clearly. Short-term confidence in revenue growth peaked in 2022 and has declined sharply since, even as longer-term confidence has proven more resilient. It’s a meaningful shift in tone. An example being an acknowledgment that AI ROI remains elusive: - 56% of organisations are not seeing measurable upside. - Only 12% have both cut costs and grown revenue. This mirrors what I’m seeing with clients. AI success requires more than FOMO investing. End-to-end transformation, reimagining work, redesigning processes, and putting in place the right data, agents, security, compute and ways of working is far harder than most business cases and adoption curves suggest. I was surprised to see 69% of CEOs agree their culture enables AI adoption - especially when our November global workforce survey highlighted only 14% use Generative AI daily. As Paul Griggs said in yesterday live World Economic Forum press briefing: “AI raises the floor for all employees, but it’s leaders who raise the ceiling.” The challenge now is not the technology itself, but how leaders translate ambition into tangible outcomes in a more volatile world. On the growth agenda, 42% of CEOs have started competing in new sectors/industries in the last few years. Industry convergence and cross-sector collaboration is no longer theoretical. I see it playing out in real time with clients. In India, tech firms, telcos, governments and infrastructure players are collaborating on AI-ready data centre build-outs, such as Google partnering with AdaniConnex and Airtel in Visakhapatnam. These investments are already catalysing new ecosystem plays, investments in infrastructure and creating new jobs. Another area I see this is within retail, tech and financial services (payments) with agentic commerce enabling a very different consumer experience and access to credit, where relevant. 🔗 Full report here and kudos to our team for pulling together another excellent set of CEO insights https://lnkd.in/epMPrPDn #pwcceosurvey #wef26 #leadership #AI #ceosurvey

- And giving marginalized communities the dignity of education absolutely matters.

One day we’ll wake up and ask why we talk about geopolitics in the boardroom and in our scenario plans and investor calls.

However we dare not even bring this up with our employees. We have gone from listening to deafening silence on war, hate crimes, immigration, racism.

One thing keeps circling in my mind: we all agree critical thinking is THE skill for the AI era.
But critical thinking in English ≠ critical thinking in Hindi ≠ critical thinking in Mandarin or Japanese.
