Crazy how two of the absolute best visual novels ever made (and just games period, I don't care that there's barely gameplay) are Fata and Fate. The "Fat" duo. You could say it was fate. Plus, you know, Morgana and King Arthur...

I love AA, but this is Shu Takumi's best work. The presentation did inspire me to use spotlights in my game, but I'm still adding it because that's a minor detail.

Story, visuals, music, unique gameplay... It basically has it all. Special shoutouts to the insane animations for a DS game.

Portal 1 is the perfect tutorial and if 2 didn't exist, that would've been more than enough. But 2 does exist and it's somehow better. Great puzzles, great comedy, great atmosphere and setting... And of course, GLaDOS and Wheatley will always be up there in best villains in gaming for sure.

Playing this one the Wii was like a religious experience. To be honest, Xenoblade 3 is more or less tied to it for me and I can barely decide which one I like more, but nostalgia wins despite 3 having much better combat.

I could gush about it, but character limit, so... THIS IS THE MONADO'S POWER!

Yakuza 0 is so close to perfection than it convinced me to play an entire series full of really long games. Going back to 3 was painful, but I had to do it for the dragon of Dojima.

A perfect example of amazing gameplay with a 11/10 story AND many memorable substories on top of it.

Kinda tying back to what I was saying, while normally my favorite games either balance both great story and gameplay or are just 90-100% story, Bloodborne might be the one exception. The lore is cool, but every single aspect other than story is so perfect that I adore it.

I could've gone into details, but I don't want to do an actual TED talk.

One more thing, though. It's really funny to me how visual novels, the genre that a lot of people don't even consider games, can easily use that hidden potential by having player choices influence the story directly.

Gameplay can allow for stories that wouldn't work in other artforms, by integrating the player in a way that's not possible otherwise.

And somehow SOTC does it with a very simple story with very few dialogue and cutscenes. How? Play it if you haven't and you'll see, hopefully.
January 17, 2026 at 4:15 PM
Normally, even the games with both amazing story and gameplay have both aspects feel separate. You have the gameplay between the cutscenes, and you could take away one and still be able to enjoy the other.

SOTC is an exception. One of the few games that prove the hidden potential of the medium.

SOTC is art. Videogames are art and this is the game that convinced me of it as a kid. I generally only truly love games that excel at both story and gameplay the most, even putting more weight on story, which is why I like VNs so much.

I'm gonna need several posts to do my TED talk, hold on...

Starting with my favorite thing, my obsession. This one did actually have plenty of influence in Beyond R, but I only said I wouldn't include the obvious ones.

I could talk forever about my love for Fate, but I'll sum it up: Shirou Emiya is the goat, UBW is peak, and Rin Tohsaka is best girl.

¡Hola!
