We're witnessing a wealth transfer from households to energy companies in Europe through a little known subsidy - capacity markets. It's up to the Commission and national governments to get a grip on these mechanisms that cost EUR11bn in 2024 alone.

LEAG extended lignite plants in eastern Germany while profiting off coal. Now, the EU has approved €1.75bn to shut them down. How many times can fossil fuel companies profit from delaying the energy transition before doing what they should have done years ago?

In the US, some states have seen electric bills climb 12-16% higher this year.

Why? Their high concentration of data centres and capacity-market costs.

Europe must regulate unchecked data centre growth and power them with new and additional renewables.

"Today I call on every major tech film to power all data centres with 100% renewables by 2030," says Antonio Guterres.

But that's not enough. New @ouest-france.fr video highlights our message: data centres must be powered by new AND additional renewables.

Renewables continue to be a shining beacon in Europe’s energy landscape. It’s no coincidence that more countries are coming closer to phasing out coal as their clean energy capacity rises.

Unlocking the power of renewables strengthens climate ambition, economic resilience, and energy independence.

Renewables are one side of the story, but to run a fully clean energy system, we also need modern grids and clean flexibility to balance supply and demand.
On today's second Energy Day at #COP30, our new mini guide breaks down how it all fits together 👇

Our new mini-guide breaks down how soaring data centre demand, fuelled by AI, is straining energy systems and slowing the transition in Europe.

At #COP30, governments and tech giants need to realise data centres growth needs new and extra renewables, and can’t come at our planet’s expense.

In June, Ireland 🇮🇪 became the 15th coal-free country in Europe, made possible by its remarkable progress on renewable power!

But, it’s leaning heavily on fossil gas to supply for Irish data centres’ insatiable electricity demand, which accounts for 88% of electricity demand growth since 2015.
November 14, 2025 at 9:17 AM
One message at our #COP30 event on grids was clear: connecting regions rich in renewable potential with those that need the power most will take real collaboration across borders and sectors. And to succeed, the transition must deliver visible benefits for people and communities — not just industry.

📉 Coal generation has plummeted by more than 55% across Europe in just 10 years, and wind and solar now produce x2 as much electricity than the dirty fuel.

☀️ Solar is now playing a central role in Europe’s electricity generation, with a recent boom in four countries in central and eastern Europe.

Time for our quarterly update, and we’re starting with good news!

Coal generation in Spain 🇪🇸 has dropped 97% since the early 2000s, making up just 1% of the country’s power mix so far this year. The payoff? Cleaner air and 95% drop in emissions from coal power in ten years.

"We are price-takers, not price-makers, with wholesale gas costs still 75% higher than before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Homegrown clean power is the best route to energy security, lower wholesale costs, & lower bills," writes Ed Miliband.
