The other day a friend asked if I was getting enough emotional support and since then I've seen that topic mentioned in other places. I've decided to undertake an emotional support inventory and thought I'd share the main steps in my process✨
Emotional Support Inventory. Identify signs that indicate that you are in need support. Physical (tension in shoulders, shallow breathing, stomach discomfort). Emotional (irritability, restlessness, anxiety, tearfulness, numbness). Behavioral (procrastination, isolation, abandoning routines, unhealthy coping). Create a list of self-soothing activities that work for you. Could be running cold water on wrists or face. Box breathing pattern for 1 minute. 5 senses identification. 15-minute walk without phone. Journaling about your feelings; Progressive muscle relaxation exercise; Listen to specific music playlist. Lay under weighted blanket. Drink herbal tea. Identify 3-5 people who can give you different types of support. For grounding support, processing support, wisdom, comfort, energy, etc. Practice asking for specific types of support. "I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed right now. Could we take a walk together this afternoon?” Or "I'm feeling frustrated and need to vent for a few minutes. Are you in a place where you could listen?”
