She's not unbiased & marriages are complicated, but maybe he was as atrocious a partner as could be. There are some strong, independent women who also cheat on partners, atrociously.

I'm afraid you misunderstand the most fundamental motivation of those misled and their "misleaders."
They don't look to a future, enlightened or otherwise.
They want to go back to the past!
(Specifically, to a past that they think was good for folks like them.)
