The year was 1667, and Jan sensed he had made a terrible mistake. He removed his smock, folded it, smoothed out the wrinkles, and then set the garment on his stool. His glare moved to the blank canvas propped on the easel in the center of the room. Why did I agree to this? I do not enjoy painting men. There was no mystery or beauty to be found in the masculine form. Besides, it was easier to lie to women about why he altered their features in his paintings. ‘I must soften everyone’s features; you are no exception’ and ‘This is how I see you’ were common and well-accepted excuses. Men, on the other hand, tended to poke more holes in his words. Jan went to his brushes and rearranged them from largest to smallest, a vain attempt to soothe himself.
