But unlike this simplest example, the higher perplexanes do correspond to new molecular topologies. @profdaveleigh.bsky.social's description is exactly right. We hope that perplexanes are a conceptually simple way to connect classical topology to branched structures for the synthetic community!

Hi Stu, a bit late, but just joined Bluesky and saw this! I'm the first author on the paper and wanted to clarify. Our point here is that the classification is new, not the structure. Our example, like Fujita's, is a triply interlocked catenane, which can also be viewed as a hopf perplexane
