GOP lawmakers to appeal to Utah Supreme Court on new congressional map
As expected, Republican leaders are not going down without a fight, announcing that they will appeal the state's new Congressional map to the Utah Supreme Court.

"I think Map C made sense," Gov. Cox says. He adds the map chosen was "gerrymandered as everything I've seen."

Gov. Cox says he supports the Utah GOP's repeal efforts, then opines on the race. He says she's watching McAdams go from "a moderate to Mamdani-land."

I ask if that's true for the rural districts with hyper-partisanship? "I think it's true everywhere."

On redistricting, if the Utah legislature does what they do, does it nullify the Utah GOP's efforts?

If the Supreme Court struck down Prop. 4, but Gov. Cox says he doesn't see that happening. He says there could be options on the map itself.

Anything in redistricting the judge has done amounted to impeachment? Gov. Cox says he doesn't know there's anything he's seen that rises to that level, but adds the standards are ancient and not well defined.

Is homeless campus an acknowledgement that dispersed model has been a failure?

"I think we failed to properly fund that concept," Gov. Cox says, adding he has no intention to close those shelters down.

Are prosecutors in SLCo. doing enough to prosecute fentanyl dealers in overdoses?

"I hope we're prosecuting whether there's a death involved or not. This is part of the problem, we're not holding people accountable." He also acknowledges limited jail capacity.

On the "involuntary commitment" part, Gov. Cox says that should be used sparingly, but give them an opportunity to get things out of their system.

Use opioid settlement funds? The governor says they're still having discussions.

On the 1,300-bed homeless shelter, Gov. Cox confirms he is looking to fund it.

"We have to get people help," he says. "Being homeless is not a crime at all, but crime is crime. We have to hold people accountable... we have to get them treatment."

On Venezuela and potential military intervention, Gov. Cox says he hopes they can avoid it.

On Justice Nielsen, is he to help the redistricting case for the legislature?

"I didn't pick him because of this case in any way," Gov. Cox says. There were 7 candidates sent to him.

Gov. Cox implies he will be watching the legislature on any bills targeting the judiciary.

The governor says he does support expanding the Utah Supreme Court, and the Utah Court of Appeals. He thinks amount of litigation and ruling timelines are too much. Same for district court (needing resources)
