We think this supports updates to models of reinforcement learning, by positioning VTA GABA neurons alongside dopamine neurons, for dynamic incorporation of cost or risk into calculations of motivation and value.

Journal of Neuroscience papers were my entry point into the field as a young grad student and I was so thrilled when we published one of my PhD papers there back in the day. So this is kind of a lovely full circle moment.
