FX-4CR V2 Firmware Field Test: Is This The Best Budget HF Radio Now?
The **FX-4CR** is a fun little **20 watt** **HF ham radio** that I've talked about a lot lately (see link to playlist below). It's small and relatively lightweight, while also feeling solid enough to handle portable operations like Parks on the Air. Mr. Yu BG2FX, who created the radio, ships it with version 1.7.3 of his firmware. This software is pretty good, making excellent use of a small screen and a limited number of buttons to provide a lot of functionality. However, a fellow named Daniel (**F5BUD**) has created a V2 firmware that builds and improves on Yu BG2FX's work. It uses the small screen even better, providing higher contrast, more readable text, and fixing some real issues. Recently I showed you how to update the firmware on your FX-4CR (either version), and how to calibrate the F5BUD firmware. Now, at long, long last, here is my overview and review of that firmware in actual operation. I decided to take the radio with me on my long trip to New Jersey, and put it through its paces at **POTA**. There are chapter stops, so if you just want the review itself, feel free to jump! Thank you for being along with me on this ride with this particular radio! I'll be changing gears after this to talk about the FTX-1 and other things soon, but I hope you'll stick around, even if you came here for the FX-4CR!
