The Belize Zoo was founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola. It is home to more than 175 animals of about 45 species, all native to Belize.
Meet Tripod and Quad! The Belize Zoo is now home to a duo of gray foxes, the only species of fox native to Belize.
Tripod, as his name suggests, is a three-legged fox.
Quad, his “roommate,” is a surrendered pet.

Hero has been at the zoo for 10 years and was lovingly raised by our Animal Management Department. He came to us as a tiny cub after being confiscated from a young man in the Toledo District.
Although Hero isn’t seen by the public, he plays a vital role behind the scenes.
