I ended up doing this since some words don’t use the same character in the same way/for the same reason (at least from an English point of view) and my brief attempt at studying characters alone would make guessing meanings of new words confusing Ex: 物理 but then 料理

I never got far (and then I kinda stopped studying for a bit so I lost nearly all of it and recently restarted) but I best understood kanji by studying them in situ - granted maybe this only works at the beginner levels but I found focusing on word units worked better for me than characters alone
