Did you know that I make belts? I’ve been focusing a lot more on chainmail than leather lately, but for TBT here’s belts I made for my wife and I back just before the pandemic. They’re pretty simple, but there’s some cute details for both of us. 😊

This is an old picture, taken before I knew what I was doing (not that I do now), so the lighting is terrible. The lighting is once again terrible, due to being an old photo taken before I had any idea what I was doing, but you can just see that the belt with the silver buckle is stamped with a rose at the end, while the belt with the golden buckle is tooled to resemble to Triforce at the end. The end is tapered to a slightly rounded point, tooled with a thin groove following the shape of the belt, and there is a rose blossom stamped into the point. Here are some bracelets I’ve made recently in a pattern called Barrel Weave. It’s a delicate weave, I’m always a little nervous about the single rings connecting the barrel segments, but it’s a pretty one!

It’s a simple pattern, I can do them in four different sizes/levels, and it’s easy to add a ribbon (or ornament hooks, pics of those will come later) The three-tier version even makes a nice poinsettia. 🎅🏼🎄❄️

A scale Mail flower, intended for use as a holiday ornament, decoration or pendant. This is the largest size I make, with three rows of scales, beginning with two offset rows of five large scales apiece, and a third inner row of five small scales, all joined by 16 and 18 gauge rings. This particular piece is designed to resemble a poinsettia flower, with the bottom row of large scales in green, and the second and third rows in red, all connected by red rings. It is resting on a neutral fabric background. A double-row five-petal scale flower, made in shades of silver and blue to evoke a snowflake, hanging from a blue ribbon to demonstrate its use as a holiday ornament. The photo was taken while it was on display at a recent market, so it was hanging on the front of my wooden “Welcome to the Shire” sign, made from a board with bark still on the edges, the words and vine decorations painted on in black.

The flowers are five scale “petals”, each joined by rings to form somewhat rigid structures. Continuing off the previous posts, a picture of my work table with chain mailing pliers, and a half-finished piece. The Dragonscale cuff holds its shape well on the finished side, showing the diamond shape that it will take. The other side is still to be finished, but the piece holds itself stable at this point and is much easier to work with than at the beginning.

Once you have a certain amount of it down, it starts to hold its shape better, and becomes much easier to weave. Some of the rings on the working edge are still a little fiddly, but when the majority is holding itself stable then it’s not so difficult to fix those bits.

A picture of the same table as the previous post, with mailing pliers, loose rings and a partially made piece of a chainmail cuff. The Dragonscale weave now has several more rows complete, and is beginning to hold its shape quite well. The edges where it will continue to expand still show some looser rings, but much more stable than before. At this point the chainmail is much easier to work with, and expanding it becomes a matter of routine.

Today for WiP Wednesday, I decided to show some of the process of making those Dragonscale chain cuffs. Like many weaves, Dragonscale is most difficult at the beginning, where you’re trying to keep a bunch of loose rings straight.

My work table with several sets of mailing pliers, loose rings, and a barely started piece of chainmail (also my drink, the fabric pouch I keep my pliers in, and a chip clip). The chainmail is the beginning of a cuff in the Dragonscale weave, and shows that at this early stage, the rings are loose and dangly, making them difficult to work with, as they tend to flop around when you pick up the piece to add to it. I like playing with keychains, making flags and simple fun references. The Canada Flag and Pokeball are two popular ones (who’s surprised 😆), so I’ve made some replacements, but I really need to just have a bunch on standby.
