@bbirdiman.bsky.social
the restless reckless performance poet.
food should be free. housing free.
healthcare vision dental mental.
education internet transport.
let my people be free.
there should be a cafeteria,
in every single community,
where anyone (anyone!) can
walk in and get a hot meal, for free,
just by saying "i am hungry."
November 1, 2025 at 9:11 PM
another way we can reduce long work commutes is
to ensure that jobs are available where folks reside,
and that housing gets created where people work.
October 13, 2025 at 8:00 PM
we also learned most business travel is unnecessary
as it can quite easily be accomplished via zoom.
so let's stop giving travel expenses a tax break.
October 12, 2025 at 7:30 PM
we've also learned, from the very start of
the covid pandemic, that most of us can easily
work from home, freeing ourselves from
a burdensome commute.
October 11, 2025 at 8:30 PM
and anyone willing to take a train rather than fly
should get that train-trip for free, to reward them
for that very considerable reduction of carbon.
October 10, 2025 at 7:08 PM
anybody who is willing to take public transportation
should be rewarded for that valuable contribution.
society as a whole benefits greatly from that.
October 9, 2025 at 7:00 PM
to begin, however, while we figure out this
great transportation recalibration, the first step
is to make all public transportation free.
immediately.
October 8, 2025 at 7:30 PM
so to return to my ongoing theme here:
although we'll need to greatly recalibrate
our "needs", transportation is a necessity,
and thus should be free.
October 7, 2025 at 7:00 PM
and so, just as folks fly less often because it has
become unaffordable, they will drive less as well.
but will it come before climate change attacks?
October 6, 2025 at 8:02 PM
electric cars won't save the day either.
it will eventually become nearly as expensive
to charge your car's battery as to
fill the tank with gasoline.
October 5, 2025 at 7:00 PM
then, of course, the same change will come to cars.
it will get more and more expensive to run a car.
gasoline, in particular, will be very expensive.
October 4, 2025 at 7:00 PM
they will not ban ordinary people from flying.
(even though that will be their practical effect.)
they will just price it out of affordability for us.
October 3, 2025 at 7:44 PM
so flying will be unaffordable for most folks.
millionaires will fly, dumping carbon into the air.
(billionaires, the worst, take their private jets.)
October 2, 2025 at 7:00 PM
of course, to "take down" commercial aviation,
they will just keep raising the cost of flights,
until only millionaires will be able to afford to fly.
October 1, 2025 at 8:16 PM
it would be smarter to start cutting it now,
while we still have some flexibility, and not
wait until our hand is forced by necessity.
but we're dumb.
September 30, 2025 at 7:00 PM
so sooner or later, we'll simply be forced to
take down the bulk of consumer aviation.
if we do it sooner, take down 65%.
if we wait until later, 90%.
September 29, 2025 at 8:42 PM
we fly because we can.
we think we can afford it.
we think we can afford it because
we do not factor in the cost of the carbon
that is put in the air.
September 28, 2025 at 7:00 PM
there are ~45k flights every day in the u.s., with
~2.9 million passengers. we take it for granted
as we fly from one coast to the other. it is crazy.
September 26, 2025 at 7:17 PM
and the other sore spot, of course, is aviation.
air travel, both commercial and private, dumps
unbelievable amounts of carbon in the air.
it's crazy.
September 25, 2025 at 8:55 PM
so automobiles are the big sore-spot.
folks need transportation, so we need
to have a way for us to go from place to place.
but 2-ton cars are not it.
September 24, 2025 at 8:30 PM
first-world autos put too much carbon in the air.
we need to scale it back to take it worldwide, and
primarily we must cut back the need dramatically.
September 23, 2025 at 8:01 PM
but we can't give a car to every person on the planet.
we cannot put gas in the car of every person.
even if we could, we wouldn't want to. it's dumb.
September 22, 2025 at 7:18 PM
we can feed every person on the planet.
we can house every person on the planet.
we can give medical care
to every person on the planet.
yeah, we can.
September 20, 2025 at 7:09 PM
since so much of our transportation infrastructure
is misguided (at best), or suicidal (at worst),
however, we'll first need to rework it quite a bit.
September 19, 2025 at 10:15 PM
we saw, when covid came on us, that the internet
could be a viable substitute for transportation, since
much of our work can be done easily from home.
