But the government of Ireland doesn’t actually get to dictate the meaning of “British isles” - it’s a term of geography, not political boundaries, and it’s been in use for over two millennia to encompass both Britain and Ireland.

Yeah, we know the term makes the Irish cranky - that was the point - but it’s still what the term means, even if you don’t like to use it.

In fact, despite Ireland being part of the British Isles I would strongly advise against calling someone from Ireland “British” unless you like being shanked by a broken bottle of Guinness.

Obama was deeply charismatic but the median Democratic politician can’t replicate that, and you need hundreds of winners to hold power in this country. If Republicans can win with the most unpleasant assholes imaginable but Dems need Obama every time, we’re not gonna make it.

Genghis Khan? A bunch of Roman generals probably? In a historical context when everyone is some flavor or another of awful I guess we can talk about tactical acumen in a neutral context. But for states that went up against liberal democracies it’s definitely right-wing copium.
