Funny story. Back in 2022 we won an *Emmy award for a documentary we made about an expedition to Greenland. Due to an elaborate game of paper-rock-scissors, the Emmy award now sits in my office and I like to joke that I want to be introduced as an Emmy award winning climate scientist.

Public funding for higher education has been on a downward spiral since the 80s. The chart below is for the University of Michigan, but the story is similar everywhere. In 1960, the state subsidized ~80% of the cost of education. Today, students pay 80% and the state contributes about 10%. 5/

Federal funding for research as a fraction of GDP has remained remarkably constant at about 0.4% of GDP despite changes in presidential administration, recessions and changes in priority. Scientists feel and complain about the wiggles, but things have stable. 2/

The University of Michigan has decided to abandon its commitment to DEI demonstrating that the overarching core value of the University is to maintain funding at all costs and everything else is just messaging and PR.

Shirley the 12 week old puppy has decided that her song is "Sweet but Psycho" by Ava Max and, given the violence that she just unleashed, this song sure seems to suit her.

If we want to understand how and when we get to that future, we need to understand the processes that lead to calving. 

There are a variety of styles of calving, ranging from sporadic detachment of huge tabular bergs, to explosive disintegration and fragmentation of ice shelves.  6/
