A 4-metre-deep peat core that our team collected along the Ikelemba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in early 2018, turned out to be over 40 thousand years old, making it one of the most ancient tropical peatlands ever discovered. It even survived the dry phase of the Last Glacial Maximum.
