Technical: Master the Lasso tool, one of the best editing buddies in digital art and it's in every program, it's annoying at first but it's worth it.
General: Feel free to fail! "Art rules" are just agreed upon ways to achieve results, you can still succeed "failing" never feel discouraged over it.
