The benefit is that you don't need to type a username, but I still only use security keys as a second factor (plain FIDO rather then passkeys) so I personally don't get anything out of it except needing to buy a new set eventually that can store more resident keys if I go to passkeys.

That's not entirely true. That only holds for resident (stored on device) keys. FIDO supported non-resident keys where the server sends an key encrypted with your hardware key's built in key every time you login. Passkeys as a whole got associated with only resident keys.

I'd love if I could have bought my hardware keys from the factory with the same key so that they'd essentially be "the same" and I'd only have to sign one up. That feels like a terrible idea from a security perspective though so I suffer through registering both for important things.

That does sound convenient. I'm still old fashioned so I haven't swapped to passkeys on anything. I'm kinda hesitant to use my phone with the lock in that causes. I should really play with it sometime though.

Ah, I see. I didn't know that was a feature. Is that just for passkeys then? It sucks that it isn't supported, especially since physical keys are kind of pricey.

What is it missing? I've only really used FIDO2 auh on sites through it so I assume my workflow hasn't hit the issues yet.
