Data provided by Zillow, the Seattle-based online real estate marketplace, show ZIP codes that have experienced the biggest increases in rent include neighborhoods that have seen the most activity from out-of-state investors converting single-family homes into rentals, according to a Post-Dispatch analysis. Four of the five ZIP codes with the biggest increases in rent since 2023 are located in North County, in a swath from the airport to the Mississippi River that includes Berkeley, Woodson Terrace, Ferguson, Jennings, Bellefontaine Neighbors and Riverview, data show. Many chalk that up to voters eager to express their frustration with Trump’s administration. The problem was dire enough that County Executive Ryan McMahon summoned the county’s top Republicans in the hours after the election to talk about what went wrong and what to do about it. Their consensus? Trump’s dragging us down. Burtis said the party’s brand has become toxic in a county whose government has been under Republican control for decades. Voters have never elected a Democrat to serve in the county’s top elected post as Onondaga County executive. Burtis, a legislator since 2015, said he heard repeatedly from Republican voters before the election why they would not vote this year, or planned to vote for someone other than a Republican. What didn’t they like about Trump and his policies? “Over the hundreds of doors that I hit, it’s really everything,” Burtis said. “The president’s personality. The way he interacts with people. It’s tariffs. It’s ICE. It’s the government shutdown.” He said Trump’s drag on the ticket is the only explanation he sees for the blue wave in Onondaga County that helped Democrats flip the legislature.
