There is no oversight on regional councils from communities because there is no media reporting of what they are up to. The only upside was it trashed the right wing media disinformation ecosystem in the rural areas.

Have a look at Queensland, Australia. News ltd bought up all the local regional newspapers and then closed down most of them. There is little scrutiny of local gov., no or little reporting on local issues.
