A ready-to-submit complaint form on Stripe's website, with Fulvio's personal info redacted, and part 1 of the complaint text: Hi, I'd like to submit a complaint about Stripe's role in directly and indirectly deplatforming merchants who are producing and selling goods that are compliant with the law in their and Stripes' jurisdictions, whereas companies in the payments space should be operating as neutrally as legally possible, like utilities. Part 2 of complaint: I've been disappointed for a few years now about how Stripe imposes policies on merchants more strictly than what the law in Stripe's merchants' jurisdictions dictate, but I've been motivated to finally voice my concerns by recent incidents. I understand that they have been caused by a small extremist campaign group who have primarily been pressuring card networks (Visa, MC, etc.) to impose tighter and tighter restrictions on things like adult content, who I understand have in turn pressured payment processors like Stripe to comply. This has now resulted in what were some of the few remaining convenient platforms (for both merchants and end customers) for such content - such as Itch.io, a Stripe customer - being compelled to remove a staggering amount of creative works that are enormously difficult to sell elsewhere, so that the platforms can ensure the continuity of their businesses by not losing the ability to take payments. However, the knock-on effect of countless creators effectively being shut out from the platforms they were selling perfectly legal games, illustrations, animations, literature, etc. on is unconscionable. It's these artists and creators who are all now contending with the latest in a line of similar existential threats to their invariably small or solo-run businesses and indeed their livelihoods, and each of them are powerless to push back individually. Part 3 of complaint: I know I've given a lot of background for a broad trend in the payments industry but to be clear, this specific complaint is about Stripe's role in it, namely pressuring and suppressing its customers like Itch.io, other individual companies that sell their own adult content, and other platforms that (currently, or formerly due to butting heads with Stripe in the past) provide services to creators of adult content. Not only is this a overreaction to the ill-justified complaints of a deluded disproportionately noisy pressure group whose views are out-of-step with society and *vastly* outnumbered by Stripe's customers and their own end users/customers, but it is wildly out-of-step with Stripe's stated mission and financial interests too. Because of the industry I work in, I frequently end up seeing a lot about Stripe's services and the culture and philosophy that has enabled the company to be as successful and large as it is. The mission to "increase the GDP of the internet" is a noble one that I respect, and I know that Stripe knows that achieving that means enabling as many people as possible to easily buy and sell goods and services online - especially when Stripe providing that service is what makes a vendor's ambition feasible in the first place. Fundamentally, it's in Stripe's financial interests to pursue that goal by being as neutral as legally possible in what they allow merchants to sell. I accept that some types of goods and services have higher operational costs for Stripe to serve due to higher risks of chargebacks or fraud, but surely the solution looks more like letting such transactions have higher fees to cover that, rather than needing to outright forbid them? It's also maddening to see options for taking payments shrink in recent years, for content that is perfectly legal and is thus what payment companies frankly have no business objecting over. At the end of the day, what I as someone's end customer want to do is to exchange money for some goods and/or services - i.e. payments companies should do what I say (within the law) and not the other way round! Stripe having opinions beyond what the law states not only directly damages the company's bottom line and infuriates merchants, but also end customers! In this day and age, customers are becoming increasingly savvy, and thus the existence and role of Stripe and other payment processors is becoming more common knowledge - frustrating customers thus means reputational damage for Stripe, and further harm to its bottom line when customers consciously choose to avoid vendors who use Stripe. I know that standing up to the card networks is a daunting prospect, when that would pose the existential risk of them terminating their services to Stripe, but I know that Stripe is large enough to push back in a way that they will not be able to dismiss out-of-hand. There is a lot of business for Stripe that's at stake here, especially when you consider that this is far from the first step that the hostile pressure group has taken, and it would be far from their last. It would also be a slam-dunk PR win for Stripe to advocate on the behalf of the merchants, creatives, and businesses that the company insists that it exists to serve and allow to achieve their dreams (and remember that the ones affected by these issues who really need your support here are less powerful than on average!). Similarly, taking on this fight in the name of Stripe's mission would also energise the company's staff, because I know from their writing that they are highly bought-in to it and Stripe's culture strongly reflects that. Finally, I hope that I've made clear that it's just the morally right thing to do.
