Fair enough. I think it wads originally put there when being loaned into English to make sure the e is not seen as silent. Same reason English has an accent in Pokémon to make sure people don't say "poke - mon".

Once it enters usage in English the original language no longer has a claim to it and people will pronounce it however they want to. Do you have to throat your "r" when saying croissant?
And yeah if I saw "latte" written down and had never heard it spoken before I would say it with a short vowel.
