I squeezed my fist, the metal loops of my self-defense knuckles digging into my skin. I wished I had a fucking gun. Hadley whispered, “We just have to go.”

I took Hadley in properly. She wore a tight-laced black corset top. Black skintight pants. Spike-heeled boots. Wide belt with extra straps around her thighs. Each ear had a dozen silver hoops and studs. All of that was a lot (in a fantastic way), but her mouth was magic. Wide, curving. She had a hint of an overbite, her top lip pouting, permanently, over the swell of her bottom lip. Some intense lipstick—hard to tell what color in the club’s lighting. I forced my gaze up, to Hadley’s eyes. Green-blue under arch eyebrows. She’d seen me looking. “So,” she said, “what do you think?” I inhaled sharply, my mouth open. She leaned toward me. “Of the club.” I flattened out a stupid grin. She was a hell of a lot better at this than I was. Whatever the fuck this was that we were doing. Flirting, probably? Though calling this flirting—my heart, the butterflies in my stomach, the hot flush and the cold chills—felt wrong. How could something this electric be flirting?

That Saturday, Halloween, Hadley was all dressed up in a witch costume, ready to give candy to trick-or-treaters. Apparently, she’d been doing it for years in this building. “Do you really think anyone will come?” I asked. Things were getting scary. One country had invaded another. Bombs were starting to fall. The president gave an address to the nation. “Of course,” Hadley said, with forced brightness. “It’s Halloween!” There was something frenetic about Hadley’s demeanor. Pretending normalcy seemed dumb, but whatever. I stayed out of her way and let her do her thing.
