Repeatedly betraying other companions will make him leave. (Handing Astarion over to the gur, sacrificing them to boooal, letting Shadowheart kill Laezel etc). He's gonna dip before that becomes him.

Alternatively if you play as a drow woman, and repeatedly berate and degrade him he'll also leave.

An impulsive two panel comic I whipped up in regards to my Tav, Merikh. Merikh (childname Nil. Also the drow in the first slide), grew up in Skullport 's dredge. It wasn't a healthy or fun time.

Merikh left the underdark to find work in the city and instead got abducted by mindflayers. He now has to navigate conflicting party members and past trauma. "Death is an elf" is told through a series of long rests.
