Its interesting that Johns was one of Britain's top film stars during WW2, playing his vatiations on gentle, unheroic, ordinary men, reflecting, I guess, the ordinary stoicism of Britain in wartime. The time for WW2 heroes (Mills, Hawkins etc) came retrospectively.
