It’s #findsfriday and here for your enjoyment is the Nebra Sky Disk, which I was lucky enough to see at the Stonehenge exhibition a couple of years ago. Made of bronze, it dates back to 1600 BC, and is considered the oldest depiction of the night sky

Went for a solstice wander in the woods yesterday, then another beneath a brilliant blue-gold sunset. I prefer the winter solstice to the summer one; it feels like light sparking in the darkness, like potential as the wheel of the year turns.

Recently had a wander around some Roman ruins in London, and here, for #RomanFortThursday are the remains of a Roman fort in Noble Street. It's possible to see where the fort, constructed c 110AD, was incorporated into the later, thicker city wall built in 200AD, sections of which still stand.
Looking down from street level to the remains of a square guard tower that was once at the edge of the Roman fort. It joins a thicker piece of later wall, the join where they meet visible as a line between the two. Above these remains are the ruins of 18th and 19thc houses, destroyed during WWII (which is when the earlier ruins were exposed). A modern brick and glass building overlooks the site, so there is almost two millennia of architecture in this image.

Lovely to see that #hillfortswednesday has moved across from the Other Place. Here's one of my favourites - walking the ramparts of Maiden Castle in Dorset. One of the largest Iron Age hillforts in Europe, its scale is simply breathtaking.
A grassy pathway along the top of a huge earthwork, the land falling away to a deep ditch on the right, rising again to another rampart. The path continues on towards an undulating set of fortifications, guarding one end of the enclosure. The countryside beyond is a patchwork of fields and trees, and the sky a cloudy grey.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a Roman theatre set into the slopes of the Acropolis, Athens. Built in AD 161, it was ruined in AD 267, restored in 1950, and is still used as a theatre today

This very good boy is a funerary monument dating back to around 350 BCE and found in Piraeus, Athens. He’s thought to be a symbolic guardian of the tomb, but his natural expression makes me wonder if he’s just a good doggo, watching over his owner one last time 🐶💖

Quite a thrill this week to see the ancient ruins at Akrotiri, on the island of Santorini. Remains of a once thriving and wealthy civilisation, destroyed when most of the island exploded in a volcanic eruption around 1600 BC.
