Covering what is going on based on what the Home secretary is saying or highlighting the moral panic she is whipping up is an editorial choice

The Guardian as often when it comes to this government chooses to follow power over scrutiny. Doing so, it also chooses to mainstream far-right politics

Fascists feeling fully emboldened

Kids at the windows were being abused by them and would have been absolutely terrified if it weren't for counter protestors
November 15, 2025 at 4:31 PM
"Anti-fascists outside the hotel shouted at the Patriots: "You can't even have a game of five-a-side".

Other chants include: "I'd rather wear a skirt than be a Nazi" or "Tenconi is a mini Mussolini"."

"There are many many more of us than you!"

A handful of fascists turned up in Bristol again. They were outnumbered massively again.

We are the people, they are the tiny fascist minority that has our mainstream media and politicians' attention

The view looks just how I feel about the current state of things

Make of that what you will

We have had surveys that have shown us exactly this in the UK, France, the EU etc for many years

What we need to ask ourselves is why have journalists, politicians, academics etc chosen to focus on surveys that hype immigration

This is what I explore here:

This is the grand strategy of mainstream parties to counter the rise of the far right and fascism:

Hoping that the opposition will just be too unpalatable so they don't have to offer anything to address the many crises plaguing their countries and the world

This is where decades of denial about the systemic nature of racism and only calling it such in its most extreme occurrences take you

This is not (just) Farage being disingenuous, but him using all the journalists, politicians and academics who have euphemised racism to mainstream his politics
October 27, 2025 at 8:09 PM
The issue is not populism, it never was

Anti-populism serves a purpose though as it limits the domain of the possible in politics between the status quo and anything beyond that is painted as "populist"
October 26, 2025 at 8:14 AM
As always, expect no reflection even if it's staring us in the face

"Immigration had grabbed headlines" fuelling Reform and aides by the Labour government but no one will ever be able to figure out who has the most power to decide what the headlines are and shape the agenda
October 24, 2025 at 6:20 AM
A three-word motto with "family" and "country"... That rings a bell...
October 22, 2025 at 5:53 PM
Great to see the central role of mainstream parties covered so openly as it's been ignored for too long

However, I can't help but think that if the Guardian was serious about agenda setting, it would also reflect on their own role in the mainstreaming process

At least, things are better in other liberal democracies showing change is possible...
October 11, 2025 at 7:08 AM
At least, the system still works and everyone is held accountable in the end...

Oh wait...

(I know, this is somewhat simplistic but think of the optics at a time when the far right is hyped)
October 11, 2025 at 6:59 AM
Why people don't trust mainstream politics is a mystery...
October 11, 2025 at 6:54 AM
The damage done by those mainstream elite who entertained the idea that reactionaries really cared about free speech cannot be underestimated

Not that it matters as it's unlikely they will be held accountable, suffer any consequences or ever even reflect on their responsibility
October 9, 2025 at 4:42 PM
How "the mood shifts" on migration is a total mystery though

Imagine if voters didn't come up with their voting preferences magically in a vacuum and instead were influenced by sources of information that could be studied to explore their quality, biases and the interests they protect...
October 8, 2025 at 7:54 PM
To think Macron was once thought of as the centrist alternative that would bring peace back to French and European politics...

What @zackpolanski.bsky.social is saying is simply what anyone who pays attention to politics is witnessing

Starmer has played a key role in mainstreaming far-right politics, enabled by a mainstream media which still tiptoes around this terrible state of affairs
October 3, 2025 at 4:10 PM
This is a good example but there are many

To be clear, it's not a personal attack and I'm not saying people can't change their approach or even politics, but it does require a serious engagement with previous behaviours, responsibilities and power structures we are part of
October 1, 2025 at 10:33 AM
This quote from Starmer is a good example of what is wrong with the mainstream strategy to counter the resurgence of far-right politics

The (far)right has no answer to the many crises facing us, but the mainstream hasn't proven it does either and discarding the left only strengthens the former
September 30, 2025 at 1:00 PM
Since Starmer has let Farage set the agenda, that says as much about Reform's plans as it does about his strategy

Without Starmer hyping the "immigration issue" and much of the media covering the circus with zero analysis, there would be no Reform threat
September 28, 2025 at 9:08 PM
It really shouldn't have to be said anymore but "populism" is not the threat, it's a diversion away from the threat and crucially from the systemic nature of the issue we are facing

In doing so, it also legitimises the far right
