Virginia Perdue is a long-forgotten author. While Dorothy B. Hughes loved her books, Barzun and Taylor think the earlier ones are not worth reading. Perhaps too much of their time. But they liked this title enough to include it in their best 50 of the first half of the century, which says a lot.

Yet when I see responses to requests for suggestions of new authors to read, Barnard never seems to come up. He is simply too good to lose sight of.
