V for Vendetta is a 1982 graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. It is a dystopian story where a mysterious, masked anarchist uses terrorist tactics to fight against a totalitarian government in a near-future Britain.

Eastman and Laird conceived the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book in 1984 as a parody of superhero comics. In 1987, Eastman and Laird licensed the characters to Playmates Toys, which developed a successful line of Turtles action figures.

Space Ghost, designed by Alex Toth, debuted in 1966. He fought supervillains with his teen sidekicks, Jan and Jace, and Blip the monkey. The success of Space Ghost spurred a wave of similar action-adventure shows across all three major TV networks from 1967 to 1969.

The Joker's origin as the Red Hood first appeared in Detective Comics #168 in the story "The Man Behind the Red Hood!" as a criminal wearing a red dome-shaped hood who falls into a vat of chemicals that bleaches his skin, colors his hair green, and drives him insane.

Popeye, created by Elzie Segar, first appeared in 1929 in the comic strip Thimble Theater. The one-eyed sailor quickly became the suitor of Thimble Theatre star Olive Oyl, and Segar introduced new characters such as adopted son Swee'Pea and foes like the Sea Hag and Bluto.

Man-Bat was created by Frank Robbins and Neal Adams in collaboration with editor Julius Schwartz. He first appeared in Detective Comics #400 (June 1970) as an enemy of Batman, but later incarnations show Man-Bat as a sympathetic villain or antihero.

Darwyn Cooke (1962 – 2016) was a Canadian cartoonist who worked on Catwoman, DC: The New Frontier, and The Spirit. Upon Cooke's passing, DC described Cooke as "one of our medium's true innovators," comparing his "bold, direct style" with Joe Kubert, Alex Toth, and Jack Kirby.
