Wednesday's meeting was the final public comment hearing on Georgia Power's plan, which commission staff estimates may increase bills by $20/month on average.

Georgia Power representatives say the plan is necessary to meet data centers' power needs. Commissioners have scheduled a vote for Dec. 19.

Two commission seats were up for election in November, and Democrats in both races earned over 60% of the statewide vote, defeating the incumbents. The newly elected commissioners, Peter Hubbard and Alicia Johnson, will take their seats in January.

The Public Service Commission regulates Georgia's utilities, including Georgia Power. The five-member commission is currently composed entirely of Republicans. The PSC has approved six rate hikes since 2022.

Naeomi Madison tried to begin hormone replacement therapy in October. She showed a physical copy of the preliminary injunction to a GDC staffer.

“She suggested I got the court order ‘off of Google’ and refused to look up the case online at my request,” Madison wrote in an affidavit.

Despite the preliminary injunction issued in September, some plaintiffs continued to be denied hormone replacement therapy by prison medical officials.

The latest ruling made a permanent preliminary injunction that required the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) to continue offering hormone replacement therapy when deemed medically necessary for those suffering from gender dysphoria “without regard to S.B. 185 compliance.”

Other local activists issued a press release before Tunick's hearing Wednesday, calling the charge baseless and arguing it was a political prosecution by the Trump administration.

Tunick had his first hearing at the Richard B. Russell Federal Courthouse in Atlanta on Wednesday. He pleaded not guilt to the charge.

Prosecutors did not seek pretrial detention for Tunick, and he was expected to be released later that day.
