Last night we left Tromsø in northern Norway, heading south. In the early hours of the morning, the sky burst into life, putting on an incredible show for those of us on deck. It really was something special!!

No edits, no filters — here’s what I captured on my (3 year old!) phone. 🤩

Hei from Ålesund! 🇳🇴 I’m currently working my way up the Norwegian coast on @fredolsencruise.bsky.social Bolette as one of the on-board @gostargazing.bsky.social astronomers. Keeping our fingers crossed for clear skies and Northern Lights! ✨☺️

Against all the odds, I got a gap in the clouds — it was gorgeous!! ❤️🌙

🔭 UK astronomers: an observing challenge for you THIS EVENING!

A very thin (18h old) new crescent Moon will be to the North West just after sunset. Most of the UK will be clouded out, but if you are in Scotland (or anywhere else that has a clear view to the NW horizon) please do look out for it.

Successful eclipse viewing! Took my telescope + solar filter to my local park, plus glasses (thanks to @gostargazing.bsky.social, FLO, and Astronomers without Borders), and orrery (borrowed from work @universityofleeds.bsky.social). Glad the clouds mostly stayed away! 🤩🔭

Rusty has since branched out into testing the unified model of AGN. Unfortunately his torus is actually an iced doughnut. 🍩 It also isn’t restrictive enough to work for its intended purpose, so he has gone back to the cone…

Proposals are now open for the newest single dish radio telescope. Resolution isn’t great, but it is extremely good at detecting treats.

(Rusty is fine, he had his neutering operation yesterday)!

I was also asked to do some astronomy talks. Really enjoyed doing those too, and they were quite possibly the largest in-person audience I’ve had?

It’s nearly Ramadan, a time of year when we get through lots of dates in our house. Just received these tins from the Date Project - the artwork is gorgeous and the medjool dates inside look incredible (they are the best kind of dates imo). All their proceeds go to charity! thedateproject.org

I’m writing a quick reference guide for some cat-sitting we have coming up, and I’m far too amused with myself for this section.

Help I think someone accidentally installed cat software on my dog 🐶

Tried to make it accessible to the wider community with an Urdu translation too — my Urdu isn’t great but I got my father-in-law to check it. Please let me know if there are any errors 😂

I had ordered a bunch more of them last solstice, so time to have some fun! New location: the park near my house where I’ve been involved in some community work (with permission granted to put the can up!).

18 months of @solarcan.bsky.social! I may have put it up around the summer solstice in 2023, and then missed the next couple. I figured we were near enough the winter solstice to justify taking it down now. Pretty happy with it given I’d forgotten about it! 😂☀️
