Has anyone else ever experienced moments when you’re just suddenly present? A moment before, you’re on semi-autopilot, tuning out anything you don’t need. Then it all hits you at once—all your senses. The smell of the air, clothes on your skin—suddenly totally present. Then it fades.

The only assumption worth anything is that your assumptions may be very wrong.

Recently, I’ll see something from before the fire—a message or a post—and I’ll feel, for a moment, like I can go back. Then I think about my walk in the burn scar, how I got lost because I couldn’t recognize a street I had walked every week before the fire, and I remember it’s all gone.
