Painted in acrylic gouache across a sketchbook spread is a self portrait— at the bottom center is a profile shot of me, painted with a messy mullet and sideburns. I am looking straight ahead with a wide, unfocused stare. On the right and left are sketches of my legs in chunky tennis shoes and socks during a stroll around an unknown location. Legs and shoes are partially obscured by clouds. The brush strokes are quick and textured and entirely done in shades of blue.

The project consists of blue and orange tapestry wool with some dots and various checkers about a third up the weaving space. In the background is a slightly larger Cricket rigid heddle loom. The project is blue and yellow with some black thread on the right. The blue and yellow yarns cross together to make alternating stripes in a pattern called Log Cabin. Close up of the log cabin pattern on the rigid heddle loom. The lower strands are fully blue and yellow with some dark green scrap yarn at the right to distribute the warp evenly (horizontal threads in this photo’s angle). The warp threads on the top left are black because I learned the hard way while dressing the loom that the blue and yellow yarn like to cling to each other. That was not in my plans. However, the black thread adds variety to this pattern sample and turns the stripes of blue and yellow into alternating dashes over the black strands.

This is a painting on black canvas made with acrylic gouache. A watery bust of an ambiguous person glances directly at the viewer with a beady eye. Blue-green sparkly stars and/or distant light sources glow on the right and reflect on the watery bust, which seems to drain into jets of rococo motif-like streams of water. This is a woven sample that I am in the middle of stitching the hem on the right. The pattern is woven in a dark, cool pattern of green and red yarn. The pattern itself looks like several rows of alternating branches or capital letter E’s. The edge of the weaving is unfinished and still has a long tapestry needle attached which sits at the top right side of the fabric. Backdrop is on a red couch and there is a burlap-colored pillow at the top of the photo. Photo of the sun shining on a small rigid heddle weaving loom with the green and red woven piece from picture one while it was still wrapped onto the loom. There are wrapped up strands on top of the project waiting to be used for the next rounds of weaving. A large, white shorthaired cat closely observes the handiwork on the right hand side. Location is in an enclosed porch.

The scarf is washed/finished, and my cat decided to claim it, LOL

I did find that I got excited toward the end of the scarf and that the weaving wasn’t as tight toward the end, and split ply joins/even selveges are a mystery to me still, but it’s my third time using this loom/1st big project

Quick gestural study of the Garden State Parkway from the passenger seat, approaching the Jersey Shore during sunset. Drawn with brush pens on sketchbook quickly to accommodate for the changing lighting and trees I am holding my small sketchbook. I have it opened to show a spread/a life drawing of structures in front of me that are blurry in the background. There are colorful businesses and a slice of a theme park in Ocean City, New Jersey in the background. The photo was taken on a Sunday morning at the boardwalk. The sketchbook doodle took about 20-30 minutes and was worked on in pen. A ferris wheel, a drop tower(?) ride, and a bit of a pirate statue on top of some businesses are a few focal points. This sketchbook drawing was taken Saturday afternoon right at the ocean. It depicts an abstracted study of the waves crashing during high tide. I used greens, blues, purples, and reds to study the shapes and sea foam created by the waves. Sketched mostly in hatched ink lines and blended subtly by brush pen.

Rigid heddle loom weavers: I’m starting out, this is my second sampling on my loom

Does anyone have tips on getting the weft a little more even? I think a lot of this is tension related. Either way: I’m just happy to weave and proud of prepping a two toned warp
