“An exciting part of working in Waibira is the large size of this community, which has 120 individuals. With so many chimps, it provides a rare opportunity to explore the socioecological conditions that influence spatial cognition and foraging behavior.” -DM

While some species are relatively common in their native habitats, many are in danger of extinction primarily because of habitat destruction.

Please support ASP’s conservation efforts. We provide emerging scientists with research funding and community support to protect native habitats.

Her graduate research at Michigan focused on primate vocalizations, contributing to her interest in how vocalizations can be used to assess, and potentially improve, captive primate welfare.
December 13, 2025 at 6:41 PM
Prior to joining Johns Hopkins University, Ms. Painter studied primate social behavior and cognition, earning a Master’s degree in Psychology at the University of Michigan, and a Master’s degree in Animal Behavior from Bucknell University.

Under the guidance of Thad Bartlett and Jamon Halvaksz, K.T.’s dissertation research examines primate field schools as spaces where future researchers learn to "do" primatology and investigates how both humans and primates shape scientific training and practice.
