I know, right? I've created Kotlin API for Apache Spark in my free time when I had a full-time job, and had to essentially bury this work because we (JetBrains back then) didn't find clients interested in this. It wasn't even a question of money, just interest from the audience :(

And yes, I personally totally agree that the model is currently broken. Companies use open-source without any contribution back, users don't contribute either and they don't want to.

Also, every bit of code you're writing IS a technology lock-in. Language lock-in, possible library lock-in, possible framework lock-in. Freedom is a myth.
I prefer to use my dependency on something to the maximum - it gives me more power and control than this quasi-freedom.
