Host and environmental determinants of human milk oligosaccharides and microbiota in the Lifelines NEXT cohort
Spreckels et al. study human milk oligosaccharides and milk microbiota in Lifelines NEXT families. Human milk has an individual-specific composition, which is affected by maternal genetics, lactation stage, subclinical mastitis, and different feeding practices. Specific milk components associate with early infant gut microbiota composition and, potentially, infant growth and eczema.

Early-life development of the gut virome and plasmidome: A longitudinal study in cesarean-born infants
This study explores the dynamics of mobile genetic elements in the infant gut after cesarean birth. Fernández-Pato et al. show that early infant gut mobilome is highly individual-specific and shaped by feeding mode. Antibiotic exposure at birth has minimal effect, and early mother–infant strain-sharing is rarely detected.
