Singana was a domestic worker whose employer found she could sing. They recorded her and sent a demo which led to a 10-year recording career. She had a lot of health challenges, and died destitute in 2000. What a voice. What a song.

The “immaculate conception” is often misunderstood to be the conception of Jesus, but it was actually that of Mary - “a virgin so clean,” as it says in this song by South African singer Margaret Singana (changed from M'cingana, to make it easier for white people to pronounce).
