This illustration always fascinated & terrified me as a kid. A scene from Dante’s Divine Comedy. Canto XVII of Inferno. "New terror I conceived at the steep plunge." It took Gustave about 7 years to create all the illustrations for The Divine Comedy #GustaveDoré

Gustave Doré (1832-1883): Master of Imagination.
Possibly the best book of his works. Not so easy to get a copy of these now. If you have one, you have a treasure.
