They built the floors to last. This colonnade was the waiting lineup for all the clients to meet their representatives in the government - they'd be standing or sitting there half a day or more. Lol. Still do, for the tours on holidays. :)

For awhile, Venice was the richest city in the world. One way to show it was exotic stone work. You'd be amazed at what they did with columns.
