The Survey's mission is to study Arkansas's past and share it with the people of Arkansas.
The funded project, which began October 1st and continues through September 30, 2027, focuses solely on the Alexander Site, but a growing number of other collections are being affected by these changes. Posing new challenges for the Survey and all other non-federal repositories.

Regardless if the collections derive from fed projects or were understood to be under fed control, if institutions cant prove that legal title to the site had been fully acquired by the fed gov by the date on which the assemblage was recovered, the agency has no further NAGPRA responsibility.

These ancestral individuals and collections have long been understood to be under federal control, but federal agencies (in this case, the US Army Corps of Engineers) have recently begun reassessing their NAGPRA responsibilities.

We’re thankful for the support expressed by The Caddo, The Osage, and The Quapaw Nations as part of our application. A multi-component site, Alexander includes burials from one or more occupation horizons.
